3. The Cell Phone

OK, this one is a no-brainer. Pay attention to your date and not your phone. Checking your email or text messages can wait until after the date is over. First impressions are important, and if you spend too much time on your phone, she’ll think you aren’t interested in her… or that you’re a jerk.

It’s common to feel a bit uncomfortable on a first date, and checking the time or your messages on your cell can take the pressures of conversation away. First dates are all about getting to know the person, however, and that’s a little hard to do when you’re playing Angry Birds.

2. Talking Too Much

How in the world are you going to get to know this girl if you don’t give her a chance to tell you about herself? You don’t. It’s completely natural to be nervous when going on a first date — you want to impress the girl and make sure she thinks highly of you. So you prattle on about yourself until you realize the restaurant is closed and she’s fallen asleep.

A first date is a two-way street and it’s important to let your date tell you a little about herself. Keep in mind that when you speak about yourself, there are certain things you definitely don’t want to brag about. Telling her about the hot women you’ve been with is not a great start to a relationship. On the flip side, it’s OK to talk about your achievements, or what you love about your work. Just make sure to give her a chance to speak.

1. Not Paying

There is nothing wrong with splitting the bill… except when it’s the first date. Although some people might argue that having the man pay is a bit of a old-school mentality, grabbing the check at the end of the evening is a must. If money is a concern, there’s nothing wrong with an inexpensive first date. Going for a romantic walk on the beach, or having a little picnic in the park are all great ideas, and will always be remembered because they’re original.

Once the first date is out of the way, it’s OK to start splitting the bills, or even let her take you out — but until then, keep your wallet handy.
